Is Bacon Gluten Free?
Bacon has become a weekend breakfast staple around these parts. Bacon and eggs, bacon on toast, bacon on its own. There are plenty of ways to prepare it and plenty of reasons to love it, and love it we do. However, with the amount of food allergies in our household – the question needs to be asked.
Bacon, the delicious strip of goodness, is pretty hard to say no too. And for the most part, its pretty natural…. Bacon is usually a combination of pork belly, pepper, salt, sugar, spices, smoke flavor, and nitrates (according to wikipedia). That means it’s generally gluten free.
However, on my most recent expedition to the supermarket, I happened to notice some bacon specifically branded as being gluten free… which made me question is bacon not always gluten free??
It turns out cross contamination can be an issue, so to make sure you’re not going to accidentally ‘gluten’ yourself, err on the side of caution and buy something that’s labelled ‘gluten free’.
